What to do?
Modernist Route
Ferrol's historic center surprises with its charm and unique Enlightenment-inspired architecture, featuring numerous modernist buildings designed by architect Rodolfo Ucha. Explore the La Magdalena neighborhood, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, with its characteristic grid layout. Be sure to visit Plaza de Amboage and Plaza de Armas, the seat of the Town Hall, true landmarks of Ferrol's urban planning.
Boat to Mugardos and a stroll along the ria
Enjoy a unique experience crossing the estuary aboard a traditional motorboat to Mugardos. Take the opportunity to taste the famous "pulpo á mugardesa" (octopus in mugardesa) in this charming fishing village.
During the summer, explore the estuary by boat and be captivated by the spectacular coastal landscape, dotted with emblematic defensive structures, such as the castles of San Felipe, San Carlos, and La Palma, dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
Naval Arsenal and Naval Museum
Ferrol has played a key role in Spain's naval history. Visit the Military Arsenal, a masterpiece of 18th-century engineering still in use, reflecting the splendor of Enlightenment military architecture. Just a few steps away, the Naval Museum offers a fascinating tour of the city's maritime history, both military and civilian, with a valuable collection of artifacts, models, and documents that are part of Ferrol's rich naval heritage.
San Felipe Castle
Located at the northern entrance to the Ferrol estuary, this defensive castle, with a star-shaped layout typical of bastioned fortresses, is a jewel of military heritage. Its moats, gun emplacements, and underground tunnels bear witness to its strategic past, while its viewing platforms offer spectacular views of the surrounding area. It is a must-see for lovers of history, military architecture, and photography.
Meninas of Canido
Be amazed by urban art at its finest.
In the Canido neighborhood, with its seafaring roots and traditional architecture, the streets are transformed into an open-air museum with an original and vibrant homage to Velázquez's Las Meninas. Murals full of color, wit, and social criticism turn this corner of Ferrol into a benchmark for contemporary art and urban creativity.
The Fragas do Eume
Just a few kilometers from Ferrol lies the Fragas do Eume, one of the best-preserved Atlantic forests in Europe, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1997. Its humid, leafy ecosystem is home to unique biodiversity. Inside, the 10th-century Caaveiro Monastery is a highlight. It's an ideal place for nature and hiking lovers.
